Things to Do on Granbury Square This Summer Weekend

Two venues sit within a five-minute walk of each other on the Historic Square. Both run tribute concerts. Both go dark on Mondays. Both sell out. Most residents pick one, learn its rhythm, and stop looking at the other, which is how you end up driving to Fort Worth on a Friday when Larry Gatlin is playing three blocks from your house.

The trick to summer on the Square is not knowing what is open. It is knowing which stage is lit on which night, which weekend the two calendars collide, and where the new construction on East 377 is about to reroute your dinner. Here is the version of that map worth keeping on the fridge.

Two stages, one square, rarely dark together

The Granbury Opera House is the theatre building. Granbury Theatre Company, a nonprofit formed in 2012, produces the plays and musicals there in a space that got a $3.5 million renovation the same year. The address is 133 E. Pearl Street, one door off the northeast corner of the Square. Standard curtain is Fridays at 7:30, Saturdays at 2:00 and 7:30, and Sundays at 2:00, with extra shows added around Memorial Day, the Fourth, Labor Day, and Christmas.

The New Granbury Live is the concert room. It sits on the historic downtown Granbury Square and runs as a small-format venue for local, regional, and national acts. Tickets are cheaper, seats are closer, and the room turns over show by show instead of running a multi-week production.

The two rarely go dark on the same night. That is the whole reason to keep both calendars open.

The late-July collision weekend

The one night this summer where both rooms are running competing headliners is Friday, July 31. Infinite Journey opens a three-show run at the Opera House the same evening a Led Zeppelin tribute plays Granbury Live. If you have out-of-town guests coming in, that is the weekend to invite them. If you were planning a quiet dinner on the Square, it is not.

The corollary is Sunday. GTC runs Sunday matinees at 2:00, and Granbury Live's calendar leans Friday-Saturday, so Sunday afternoon is when the Square breathes. That is the window locals use for the actual food.

The 377 detour nobody has priced in yet

If you drive East US-377 for dinner, the eastbound lane is about to get complicated. Texas Roadhouse has filed a permit for a new Granbury location, a 7,926-square-foot building with a bar, going up next to the Mattressville store at 4061 East US Highway 377. Construction is set to start July 13, 2026, with projected completion October 19, meaning the Hwy 377 corridor east of the Square will be under active build through the entire Labor Day, Oktoberfest, and Harvest Moon festival stretch.

The practical read: if your usual weekend routine involves cutting east on 377 to reach a dinner reservation before a 7:30 curtain, add ten minutes starting mid-July and reroute onto Waters Edge or Fall Creek Highway to skirt the site. It will be worse on Saturday afternoons than weeknights.

The other read is what a Texas Roadhouse anchor does to that east-side retail cluster once it opens. National-chain steakhouses tend to pull weekend dinner traffic away from the Square. Historic Granbury will still own the tribute-concert crowd, the theatre crowd, and the wine-bar crowd. It will not own the two-adults-and-a-kid-on-a-Tuesday crowd the way it does now.

What's actually worth blocking on the fall calendar

Four dates the Historic Granbury Merchants Association and Chamber have already locked in, in the order they hit:

1. Labor Day Festival, September 4–6. Three days on the Historic Square with local vendors, shopping, live entertainment, and the summer-wrap atmosphere the Merchants Association leans into.
2. Oktoberfest, October 2. Kicks off Friday at 4:00 PM at 201 E. Pearl. Single-evening event, not a full weekend, which is why it gets missed.
3. Harvest Moon Festival of the Arts, October 23–25. The 48th annual festival brings artists and artisans, live music all weekend, a Masquerade Street Dance, and shopping across the Square. This is the one non-residents drive in for. Book any dinner reservation before October 1.
4. Candlelight Tour, December 4. The 42nd annual tour of the Square, starting at 4:00 PM. Different tempo, but the parking math is the same as Harvest Moon.

If you host at Christmas, GTC's holiday production runs December 4–23, which overlaps the Candlelight Tour opening night exactly. That is a coordination problem worth solving in October, not December.

The weeknight layer most residents miss

The Square runs a quieter second calendar Monday through Thursday that never makes the festival posters. This is where the actual local knowledge lives.

• Bob's Off the Square, 106 N Lambert Street, is open Sunday 11 AM to 10 PM and Tuesday through Saturday 11 AM to midnight, with a weekly live-music rotation that fills the gap between GTC weekend curtains.
• D'Vine Wine hosts a Granbury Irish Music Session on the third Saturday of the month, where regional Irish musicians come to jam. It is the closest thing the Square has to a residency.
• Warren's Backyard runs free live music on the Square's outer edge, and Twin Canyons Ranch Resort books its own outdoor sets that pull the crowd off the Square entirely on select summer nights.
• Silver Saddle Saloon runs a weekday happy hour at 115 E. Bridge Street, useful when you want to be near the theatre without committing to a full sit-down before curtain.
• Narrow Escape at 209 M and M Ranch Rd runs its Weekday Happy Hour weekdays 10 AM to 5 PM at $25, which is the option nobody thinks of for a slow Wednesday with visiting family.

None of these show up on the festival maps that Visit Granbury prints for out-of-town weekends. That is the point. The Square you get on a Wednesday night in August is not the Square you get on Harvest Moon Saturday, and both are worth learning.

The one habit that changes your summer here

Pull up two browser tabs on the first of every month: the Granbury Theatre Company season page and the Granbury Live show list. Cross-reference them against the Merchants Association festival dates. That is a fifteen-minute exercise that will save you three Fridays of driving to Fort Worth for entertainment you could have walked to.

The reason it works is structural. The Opera House books long runs. Granbury Live books single nights. The Merchants Association books full weekends. Those three cadences interlock, and the residents who learn the pattern get the best seats, the shortest waits, and the Sunday-afternoon Square mostly to themselves.
